The Golden Compass

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I want to see this movie. The trailer on the movie’s website, The Golden Compass, is amazing.
I would want to watch this just for all the animals and effects, but it looks like there are several big name actors involved as well. I was beginning to wonder about the holiday movie season this year. Now I have at least one movie to see.

No Relief

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

I’m still sick, and now both of the kids are sick too.  At least I can take them to the doctor when they’re sick. It sucks to be sick, but it is even worse when you’re poor and uninsured. Thankfully we have medicaid for the kids. The adults just have to suffer through whatever ails us. I swear, every year I’m a little more ashamed than proud to be an American. This is not the country our Fathers fought and died for.

Apologies

Monday, October 29th, 2007

No real post today. I was up all  night with the flu. I’m completely dehydrated and exhausted. Hopefully a little sleep and whatever fluids I can keep down today will have me back tomorrow. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Freak’s Friday

Friday, October 26th, 2007

If you haven’t noticed by now, I like freaks. Really, if Rocky Horror wasn’t a clue, I just don’t know what is. Anyway, for all of my fellow freak enthusiasts, it is that time of year again. No, I’m not talking about the company dinner at the civic center. I’m talking about Tulsa’s own Freaker’s Ball.

A little myspace history and info on the ball:

In 1974 organizers wanted to put together a wild night of costumes and music and did just that at the Tulsa State Fairgrounds. Taking the name from a poem by Shel Silverstein Called “Freakin’ at the Freakers Ball” (this also became a song recorded by Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show). Silverstein also wrote “A Boy Named Sue”, which became the famous song by Johnny Cash. The first Freakers Ball was off and running. After a year or two, the event was moved to the historic Cain’s Ballroom and was then allowed the chance to really take on a life of it’s own. Under the care of Cain’s longtime owner Larry Shaeffer, Freakers Ball would flourish. With Freakers Ball serving as an annual tradition on or around Halloween.

In the early Nineties promoter Davit Souders became actively involve with Freakers Ball and Cain’s Ballroom thus introducing it to a whole new generation of costumed participants and musicians. The event has had its share of national and regional acts on the bill and has always included area artists as well. Since the latter part of the 1990’s Freakers has exclusively showcased music and musicians from the Tulsa area.

With a 32-year history, Freaker’s Ball is the single largest Halloween-related event in the state of Oklahoma. During the latter half of the 1990’s, Freaker’s Ball expanded to accommodate four stages making it the largest one-day showcase of Tulsa area music.

In 2002, the company Doc Roc took over ownership of the ballroom and began a major and much needed remodeling of the historic venue. In 2003, Doc Roc and Davit Souders/Diabolical Productions teamed up and the event grew into a record 25 plus bands and performers featuring such diverse musical genres as Celtic, Rockabilly, Jazz, Mariachi, Rock, Electronic, punk, red dirt and more. The Costume Contest, which is a show unto itself, has at times been controversial but always entertaining. Costumed contestants come as characters literally of all shapes and sizes; to add to the evening’s excitement, the audience judges the contest. With Souders as the longtime gate keeper, the drive and desire will always be to make Freakers Ball the event that is expected with additional surprises along the way. For year 33, a fifth stage will be added, raising the number of featured performers to a new record of 30.

HallowZooeen and HallowMarine

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

The Tulsa Zoo and Oklahoma Aquarium are having Halloween events this weekend leading up to Halloween next Wednesday.

The Zoo is having their annual HallowZooeen. Having been a zoo friend for several years and attending this event every year we were members , I can personally recommend this event. It is always a huge blast for the kids and tolerable for the adults. You can’t always say that about these things. Here’s what the Zoo says:

HallowZOOeen 2007

For eighteen years, Tulsans have been going “boo” at the zoo and this year’s annual HallowZOOeen will continue to be a Green Country tradition! We haven’t been to the Aquarium’s HallowMarine before, so I don’t have a personal recommendation. With their pirate-themed Halloween I’m sure that it will be a big hit this year. Maybe we’ll even make the trip out to Jenks for a little pirate booty this year.

Time to Clean Out the Cleaners

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Just a reminder about metrecycle.com and their semi-annual household pollutant collection event. If you’re like me, you probably haven’t thought much about how some household items might not be as disposable as we’ve been led to believe. I know that I’ve been tossing batteries and empty containers of household cleansers in the trash for years. I just had no idea that these things might be dangerous if just sent to the local dump/landfill.

Here is a list of some things that metrecycle can help you safely dispose of:

  • Pesticides
  • Lawn Chemicasls
  • All Automotive Fluids
  • Batteries
  • Thermometers/Items containing mercury
  • Unused Prescription Meds
  • Household Cleaners
  • Smoke Alarms
  • Bullets
    (50 caliber and smaller)
  • Acids and Caustics
  • Flammable household liquids
  • Special Paints
    (oil-based, aerosol & hobby paints)
  • NO LATEX PAINT ACCEPTED

Semi Annual Hazardous Waste Collection Event
The next event is October 27-28, 2007
Gate 7 Tulsa Fairgrounds 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day

In addition to the collections at the Fairgrounds during this event, metrecycle has several collection centers in Tulsa and the surrounding area. Find a location near you here.

Halloween Train

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Heartland Flyer does this special event every year. I haven’t made the trip yet, mostly because we would have to drive to OKC to catch the train. One of these years we will manage to get to OKC and ride this train.

halloween1.jpg
They also have a Christmas event that we want to catch nearly as much as the Halloween ride.

1.JPG
Here is a little history from the Heartland Flyer website:

HistoryThe “Heartland Flyer” was started on June 15, 1999, as a joint venture between Amtrak and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation - ending a 20-year absence of passenger train service from Oklahoma and North Texas.

On May 18, 1999, Amtrak started taking reservations for the “NEW” rail service between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth under the provisional name “The New Train.” Oklahoma Senator Don Nickles conducted a contest asking Oklahoma children to name the state’s new passenger train. The “Name the Train” program was located on Nickles’ web site and provided some suggestions used by Amtrak when picking a train name. During the contest, over 300 children submitted 500 different suggestions. The winning name, “Heartland Flyer,” was submitted by 11-year-old Katie Moore.

On June 14th, the 11 car Inaugural Heartland Flyer headed North out of Fort Worth, with dignitaries, including Sen. Nickles, Gov. Frank Keating of Oklahoma, Amtrak officials, and mayors from each of the towns served by the Flyer. Thousands turned out to greet the new train with waves, smiles, banners, and even marching bands.

After the first week of service, Amtrak stated that the Heartland Flyer had carried 1,800 passengers on its route. Riders continued to flock to the Heartland Flyer, and after one month of service, the Flyer carried almost 11,000 passengers.

HistoryIn October, Amtrak and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation added an additional coach to accommodate fans attending the “Red River Shootout” football game in Dallas between the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas. Special arrangements were made to provide shuttle bus service between Fort Worth and Dallas. The buses met the train upon its arrival in Fort Worth and delivered the passengers to their hotels in downtown Dallas and the Market Center Area. The buses then picked up the passengers at the hotels and took them to the train station in Fort Worth for the return trip. This trip proved so popular that the Flyer was sold out.

On June 14, 2000, the Heartland Flyer celebrated its first anniversary. The week started off with an Amtrak static equipment display over the weekend, offering visitors tours of a Superliner Lounge car, a diner, and coach. Family Day activities on Sunday gave visitors hot dogs and soft drinks. In addition, the U.S. Postal Service’s “Celebrate The Century” postal train was in Oklahoma City to celebrate the 1 year mark. The Heartland Flyer departed Oklahoma City that morning, with the normal consist plus a Superliner Lounge for VIP’s. The train was met in Ardmore with a large crowd and a barbecue lunch. At that point the Heartland Flyer had carried 71,400 passengers in its first year of service - more than three times what Amtrak had stated as being a success.

Monday Moaning

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

We did make it out to Oktoberfest Friday. It was a beautiful day for a festival, too, plenty of sun and not too hot. Good thing that it wasn’t hot, since we had a half hour wait for the shuttle. People were there before us too, and wound up with nearly an hour long wait for a ride from the shuttle site specified on the Oktoberfest website. (31st and New Haven, The Education Service Center)

When the buses did show up, they went to the Tulsa Teachers Credit Union (across the intersection of 31st and New Haven) instead of the Service Center. Finally, after numerous people started using their cell phones to call local tv stations and complain, the bus pulled into the parking lot. Then, instead of pulling up to where the 100+ people are/have been standing and waiting, the bus stops across the parking lot from us.

So, instead of the older people and families that have been standing and waiting for 30-60 minutes getting on and relaxing, the teenagers who had just gotten there but could sprint across the parking lot faster than everyone else got on and took up those seats. I’m sure their mothers are very proud. At least more buses started showing up as the first shuttle left.

Anyway, aside from that unpleasantness with the shuttle, Oktoberfest was great. The food was wonderful, if a tad expensive. There were interesting artists and good music. Maegan got to chicken-dance her little heart out and do arts and crafts. The ride lines (and ticket lines near the rides) were ridiculous. I can’t remember where we got them, but someone had amazing brownies. I couldn’t eat more than a bite of one. (It was the German American Society of Tulsa in Der Biergarten)

We only stayed a couple of hours and everyone was in a good mood when we left. The shuttle ride back to the park and ride site was much less trouble than the ride out, and we got home with no problems. I always like to leave on a positive note. That way everyone looks forward to next year.

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Tulsa’s Oktoberfest has it’s own myspace page here. It only took 29 years.

Seriously though, Tulsa has a great Oktoberfest. This year’s 29th Annual Oktoberfest seems set to be better than ever. The weather is cool but nice, the kids have a couple of days off from school, and we might actually get to go this year.

Admission
- Only $3 per person, daily
- Children 12 & younger: Free!
- Friday, Oct. 19 Only:
Free admission for all until 4 p.m.

Discount carnival rides: A $12 pass, good for unlimited carnival rides, is available on Thursday evening and on Friday until 5 p.m.

USA Today named us as one of the top 10 places to toast Oktoberfest worldwide and Bon Appetit magazine named Tulsa’s Oktoberfest as “one of the best German Food Festivals in the US.” We didn’t need them to tell us how great the food is, but it is nice to hear that the pros agree with us.

I love going to concerts at the Performing Arts Center. This drumming ensemble would so be worth it. But even the cheap seats are too much for us right now. Tickets are $47, $42, $37, $27 and $18, with discounts available for seniors, and a half-price ticket for students available in the mezzanine and balcony levels. You can buy tickets online from the PAC’s ticket office.

Here’s what the PAC has to say about the group and the show:

From the birthplace of Japanese culture in Nara, carrying an ancient tree converted into a large round drum, comes the sensational drum group Yamato. These musicians put their souls into these unique instruments and infuse their pulsating rhythms into the hearts of audiences around the world.

Since its formation in 1993, Yamato has played to over a million people, giving more than 1,500 performances in about a dozen different countries. The ensemble travels with several dozen large and small drums (including the odaiko drum made from a huge 400-year old tree), displaying the instruments’ versatility and instinctive appeal, both in street performances and in large concert halls.

The ten members of Yamato display their acrobatic abilities and elite physical fitness throughout the show as well. The vibrant drummers run and leap all over the stage during the entire performance. Yamato producer Yurial Luft proudly exclaims, “It’s not like the piano. With the piano you listen with your ears, but here you feel it in your body; it’s a very physical experience.”

Throughout the high-energy show, Yamato drummers also engage the audience, inviting members to participate by clapping and to help keep the beats that range from a delicate tapping to explosive, thunderous rhythms.

So if you have an extra $20 and love drumming like I do, head on down to the PAC for what’s sure to be a great show.

Downtown Saturday Night

Monday, October 15th, 2007

James and I went to his employer’s annual dinner downtown at the convention center Saturday night. Apparently the convention center is the only place in town big enough to hold them all. 6500 people plus one each, although, of course not everyone makes it to the dinner. There are doctors and nurses and other hospital personnel who had to work, and other people who just aren’t comfortable or actively dislike those large events. I love the chance to dress up for a change, and I can tolerate the huge crowd of people as long as James is with me. ( Social anxiety sucks btw)

It was a lovely dinner and everyone looked great. Our evening had a wrench thrown in the works from the very beginning though. We were a little late leaving the house. James kept forgetting stuff. At one point we were a couple of blocks from the house and he realized he didn’t have his cigarettes. So we turned around and headed back, and half a block from the house, there were his smokes laying in the middle of the street. Apparently he had left them on the roof of the car, and they made it that far before falling off the car.

Then, when we got downtown, all the parking had been taken. So we went back to Houston to circle around to the  parking garage hoping to find an empty spot there. Instead, the car dies right before we can pull on to Houston, and won’t restart. Fortunately, (and whoever thought there would be anything fortunate about car trouble or road work) Houston is under construction right there at the Civic Center. So we just pushed the car into the contruction zone and left it while we went to dinner and tried to find someone to give us a jump afterwards.

Dinner was nice, but it would have been a lot better if we hadn’t been worried about the car being towed off before we could get back to it. It didn’t but it also didn’t start when some friends tried to give us a jump-start on their way home. I had to call Uncle Frank to come save us as usual. And he did. He came out at 9:30 to fix our car so we could get home. Apparently there was a wire loose on the battery that was keeping the attempts to jump start the car from working. Once Frank reattached that wire the car started right up and we drove home.

Next year, we leave early and I wear flats.

Unschooling

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

I’ve always liked the idea of homeschooling. When my son was born it just wasn’t an option. I was a single mom without the time, money or resources that I felt would be necessary to homeschool. Then, when Maegan was born, I did seriously consider it. I was a stay-at-home mom already, and with some computer and internet experience, I realized that homeschooling might be easier than I had previously imagined. But, my husband and his sister ( a public school teacher) insisted that the socialization the kids would get in public school was a vital necessity to their well-being. So, I let the idea go.

For Morgan, it has paid off. He’s been in the GATES (gifted and talented enrichment studies) program here in Catoosa almost since we moved here when he was in fourth grade. He recently received an invitation from Duke University to take either his SAT or ACT test early (he’s in seventh grade). Apparently, he scored so well on the state’s standardized tests that they feel he should take the college entrance exams early. Depending on his score on the test (he’ll take the ACT) he may be invited to Duke next summer. We are very proud of him.

Maegan, on the other hand, is having a much more difficult time with public school. No doubt due to her ADHD. The school’s here in Catoosa are good, and her school counselor is wonderful. But, some small part of me still wonders if she might be better off at home with me.

Summer over at Mom Is Teaching sent me a link to this article at Tulsa Kids, Un-School Days by Cindy Webb. After reading the article, I’m even more convinced that public schooling may not be the right choice for Maegan. Now I just have to convince everyone else. Wish me luck. And thanks Summer for the link.
