January Weirdness

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

I’m writing this late today because the computer was acting up all morning. Last night, all of our cell phones were freaking out. Apparently, the storm last night was causing some kind of electrical interference. Just weird.

This month has been weird. It’s January and we’re sleeping with the windows open and the fan on high. Unbelievable. It’s Oklahoma for pete’s sake, January is supposed to be miserable cold. Yesterday we ran around in shorts and t-shirts.

I’ve lived here most of my life, all of my adult life, and I have never seen a January like this. I remember when you could actually pack away your summer clothes for months because there was no way it would ever be warm enough to wear shorts in January. Now my t-shirts and shorts are getting worn almost year-round. Just weird, or is there maybe something to this whole global warming thing?

Yay, our insurance came through with the money to repair our roof. Now, if we can just find a roofer that isn’t booked up until summer to do the repairs, we’ll be all set.

At least the ice storm had one positive result, plenty of work for the roofers and guys doing tree removal. Even now, you can drive anywhere in town and still see tree debris everywhere.

Some places the trees are broken with limbs hanging down, and you just know they’re staying that way until Mother Nature takes them the rest of the way down. The city/county doesn’t have money or manpower enough to clean it all up. The more remote areas will just have to stay shattered. Because, you know, that destroyed look is big these days, and is sure to bring droves of tourists. Not.

Resolutions

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

I’m usually not big on the whole New Year’s Resolutions. I never seem able to keep them, so why bother? As horrendous as last year was, I figure it couldn’t hurt to try a few resolutions this year. Plus, it makes Mom happy, and that’s always a plus.

Since Mom actually gave me her list of resolutions, I guess that’s a good place to start.

1. Lose weight. I can agree to that one. As long as we don’t expect to lose a ton overnight this one should be the easiest to keep. Just cutting soft drinks out of our diet should accomplish this one.

2.Exercise more. Since we don’t really exercise any, this one should not be impossible either. Walking would be easier if our neighborhood had sidewalks, but you work with what you have. Maybe we’ll be able to get bikes with income tax this year. We can hope for a big enough return this year, anyway.

3. Find a job. I think this one is good for me, but I wish Mom didn’t have to think of it. Social Security sucks. Mom has worked hard her whole life and paid plenty into SS only to be told that she doesn’t qualify. And with a 3 year waiting list on disputed claims, we’ll be homeless if we wait on Social Security to come through for Mom. James is barely keeping the bills paid now. He can only juggle so long before something is going to drop. We’re literally living paycheck to paycheck hoping nothing gets turned off before the next pay day. People shouldn’t have to live like this.

4. Clean the yard. As long as we can wait until spring and warm weather, I’m down with this one too.

5. Clean the shed. Ditto the warm spring weather on this one.

6. Get rid of things we don’t need. I agree with that. It is amazing how much crap you can accumulate in just a few years. The only advantage to moving every 6 months from apartment to apartment is that it forces you to go through your stuff and weed out the unnecessary.

And since we’re in the cleaning mood, here’s one not from Mom but me:

Clean the house. Not the routine stuff like vacuuming and washing dishes, but the major stuff like scrubbing the walls and wiping down the ceiling, cleaning all the windows (even the ones requiring a ladder), and washing the carpets. Stuff like that MUST be done this spring.

That’s it for my resolutions, and Mom’s, this year. Let’s hope I can keep them this year. I hope everyone else is happy with their resolutions and keeps all their most needed ones. Here’s hoping this year is a good one for ALL of us. Love, peace and prosperity to everyone.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

Hope everyone has a better year this year than last.
