This showcase of fine art and tradition, honoring the spirit of the American Indian has grown over the years, both in quality and quantity. This year it continues to evolve as a juried art exhibit and sale, meaning only the top quality American Indian artists from across the United States are invited to display and sell their creations.

The festival honors and showcases the spirit of the American Indian, manifesting itself through art, dance, music and storytelling.  Attendees can also enjoy exhibition dancing, to be performed at intervals throughout the event.

The festival features an art market, hands on activities, cultural demonstrations, educational exhibits, storytelling, student art exhibit, Indian Exhibition Dancing, and authentic American Indian food, all in addition to the artists being in their booths to exhibit and sell their artwork.

The Tulsa Indian Art Festival is a project of the National Indian Monument and Institute. It is a non-profit all-volunteer network, sponsoring scholarships in the visual and performing arts to qualified American Indian students. It is given with the assistance of the Oklahoma Arts Council.

Bells Are Ringing

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

If you’ve been downtown recently, you may have thought you heard bells ringing. You did. Every hour the new bells at First Presbyterian Church, 709 S Boston, toll to mark the hour. And the quarter hours are marked by the bells playing “Westminster Quarters”.

The Church installed the bells late last fall. The 32 huge carillon bells (some weighing up to 3,200 pounds) had to be installed using a crane to hoist the bells up to the church’s 40 foot high bell tower.

It’s Tulsa’s first church to have a full carillon, which requires at least 23 bells. It’s a lovely gift to the community. The bells add a nice touch to any trip downtown. And who couldn’t use a little more beauty in their daily lives?

The bells first played during Tulsa’s Centennial Celebration on November 16th. They also provided seasonal music during the holidays. The bells will be played to mark various events and celebrations, such as weddings, throughout the year.

New Program to ReGreen Tulsa with 20,000 trees by 2010

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Last week, Mayor Kathy Taylor, City Councilor Cason Carter (District 9) and Anna America, Executive Director of Up With Trees, Inc. announced the City’s new initiative to ReGreen Tulsa with 20,000 trees by 2010. The inaugural white bud tree, a Tulsa favorite, was planted at Tulsa’s first park – Owen Park, at the location of Tulsa’s Oldest Existing House.“Our goal is to plant 20,000 trees in the Tulsa community by 2010,” Taylor said. “Thanks to planning completed in 2007 by Councilor Carter and the Tree Advisory Committee we have been able to quickly put together a plan. This plan includes planting trees in public and private areas, as well as neighborhood education on the value and care of trees,” Taylor added.

“Thanks to the generosity of Tulsans, many of whom supported beautification and development of our river, we have raised a $1.5 million challenge grant to apply to this program. We will need $4 million in private dollars over the next three years to reach our goal,” Taylor said.

A key partner, AEP/PSO has agreed to provide $150,000 over the life of the program.

“The fabulous thing about Tulsa is how people come together and private citizens step forward to partner with government,’ Taylor said. “Each ReGreen Tulsa tree costs around $300. We challenge community groups, schools and churches to raise funds for re-greening Tulsa. One way Tulsans can participate in ReGreen Tulsa is by making a contribution to the Tulsa Community Foundation, designating the donation as “ReGreen Tulsa, 20,000 by 2010.”

“During ReGreen Tulsa, trees will be planted throughout the city in city parks, storm retention areas and on rights of way using private funding,” Councilor Carter said. “Another partner, Up With Trees, will assist with plantings in neighborhoods using community volunteers. The NeighborWoods initiative of ReGreen Tulsa will be launched in neighborhoods with the greatest need and will provide trees and tree care education.”

Up With Trees and the Mayor’s office are also working with a coalition of other tree education groups to hold free TreeFairs and educational seminars across the city this spring and throughout the year. Members will continue to work with neighborhoods at a variety of events to get the message out about how to plant and care for trees.

Citizens interested in participating in ReGreen Tulsa as volunteers can visit ReGreen Tulsa online or call Up With Trees at 610-8733.

THE GREAT GATSBY’ — A NOVEL BALLET

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Set to the jazzy music of Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and others, with choreography by Andre Prokovsky, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American novel becomes a romantic, Roaring Twenties ballet.

Through the eyes of narrator Nick Carraway, the 1925 novel tells the tale of millionaire Jay Gatsby and his obsessive passion for his long-lost love, Daisy. Though Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan, her romance with Gatsby is briefly rekindled amid extravagant parties and secret rendezvous. Tom, meanwhile, is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, whose jealous and vengeful husband wrongly suspects her of being Gatsby’s mistress.

Tulsa Ballet premieres THE GREAT GATSBY for Tulsa audiences Feb. 8-9 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. in Chapman Music Hall. Tickets are $15-$70.

It’s the third Prokovsky ballet the company has performed, after “Anna Karenina” and “The Three Musketeers” — ballets also adapted from classic novels.

As with those other ballets, “The Great Gatsby” will showcase some stunning sets and costumes, designed by Peter Farmer.

Tulsa Ballet artistic director Marcello Angelini said that he discovered Prokovsky’s ballet of this “great American novel” in — of all places—Italy. He attended a performance of the ballet at the La Scala Opera House in Milan.

“The ballet was so entertaining, the music so American and the story so true to the legend Gatsby became, I knew right there and then that I wanted our audience to experience this work in all its glamour,” he said.

“I was amazed by the reaction of the Italian audience to this American story,” he said. “I kept thinking, if the Italians enjoy it, American audiences are going to love it.”

The score for the ballet was compiled and arranged by composer and conductor Gunther Schuller, using music from such “Jazz Age” composers as George Gershwin and Duke Ellington, as well as other composers of the period such as Charles Ives.

The Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, led by Tulsa Ballet music director Nathan Fifield, will accompany all performances.

“I’ve always been crazy about jazz age music — that is what truly inspired me to do this ballet,” Prokovsky said. “But I just liked the music —Gunther is the real expert on the period, and he came up with some wonderful stuff.

“I never knew, for example, that Duke Ellington wrote such incredibly sad music,” he said. “But it was perfect for some of the ballet’s scenes.

And for one of the party scenes, Gunther dug up a Paul Whiteman piece called ‘Happy Feet’—well, the name says it all.”

Ryan’s Grill, Buffet and Bakery

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Mom took us all out to Ryan’s, 10934 E 21ST S, (918) 437-3610,  Saturday night. It was pretty packed, all four lines were full, and people were backed up almost to the door. We got there about 10-15 minutes before Mom and had to wait in the lobby. While we were waiting, several groups/families came in, took one look at the lines and walked back out. We stuck it out when Mom got there, and managed to get through the lines fairly quickly.

My only complaints were that the guy seating us tried to put us at a too small table, where Maegan would have been sitting in the aisle. Fortunately, we had a really good server (Jacob) who put us at another table (that he cleaned quickly so we could sit there). The wait staff were really good, our drinks stayed filled and there were always rolls on our table, too.  I did miss out on the mashed potatoes, which are my favorites, so I had to eat my steak alone. Maegan loved the cheese nachos, Mom went for the fried chicken, and the guys loved everything. I usually feel guilty at the all-you-can-eat places because I never have enough of an appetite to justify the expense, but I managed a full meal this time. Yay, for happy plates.
