George Carlin

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

My favorite funnyman is at the PAC this month. I have loved Carlin since before I was legally old enough to listen to him. My stepdad had his “seven words you can’t say on television” memorized and used the list everytime he had to swear. He rarely cussed, but when he did, it was always Carlin’s list. I would so love to see him live at the performing arts center. Why oh why couldn’t the show be after income tax returms so I could afford it. Wah.

Enough of my moaning, if you can afford this show, you must go see George Carlin at Tulsa’s Performing Arts Center.

“I think it is the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.” — George Carlin

After 50 years of engaging audiences with his trademark black humor, George Carlin is once again taking his quips, observations and caustic social commentary on the road. He performs one night only in Tulsa, presented by Comedy Concepts.

The 70-year-old Carlin started a career in radio in the mid-1950s. His act progressed from beat coffeehouses to television, where he gained recognition from powerhouse exposure on The Ed Sullivan Show and later The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He was a fan of comedian Lenny Bruce and was in the audience the night Bruce was arrested on obscenity charges. Carlin later became famous for his “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television” routine. He was the first comedian to host Saturday Night Live in 1975.

Carlin is the recipient of four Grammy Awards and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Comedy in 2001. He also is the star of numerous HBO specials and the author of New York Times best-selling books. His next HBO special will air in March 2008. Carlin most recently was heard in the movie Cars as the voice of the character Fillmore and appeared as Ben Affleck’s character’s father in Jersey Girl.

This show is suitable for mature audiences.

Tickets are $42 and $39.

Showtime: Jan. 25 at 8 p.m.

We haven’t made it to a Ren Faire at all this year, but I’m sure we’ll go to this one. I don’t care if we are broke, we are taking the kids out to this event. We go to this library almost every weekend anyway. We might as well go when they’re having a big event like this. After all, it is two of my favorite things: a library full of books and a Ren Faire full of costumes. Hope to see you all out there. Have a great weekend.

Fair Volunteer

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

The State Fair here in Tulsa is great. We love to go, but rarely have the money. Let’s face it, with $8 ticket prices, it costs nearly $40 just to get in. After your through the gates, there’s the cost of food, because you have to eat while at the fair.  The kids are going to want to try the rides. Hell, I want to ride the rides. So it’s pretty easy to spend way too much money at the fair. Some of us just don’t have that kind of money to just through away like that. The $100 we would spend at the fair, keeps the five of us fed for two weeks.

With that said, I have discovered a way to earn tickets to the fair. It doesn’t completely solve the problem of paying for food or rides, but it will get one through the gates.

It seems the Fair needs volunteers, and gives their volunteers: adult admission (ticket amounts are based on number of hours volunteered), food coupons, a t-shirt, and invitations to a VIP party.

They started accepting volunteers back in July. They gave the first workshop for fair volunteers to help them determine what part of the fair they wanted to volunteer to work. There is only one workshop left for this year, September 8 at 10am in the Expo Cafe. I don’t know if I’ll get a chance to make it this year, but hopefully some of you can.

Keystone Car Show

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Thank you to Bev for the heads up on a benefit show.

I’ll post this again closer to the actual show date. Keystone’s Volunteer Fire Department is having their annual carshow/fundraiser. This event is one of their main fundraising events, and these volunteer departments can always use local support. Bev has informed me that they are still taking donations for the show. Items for door prizes and concession supplies (food/drink/paper products) would be appreciated.

I’m all for helping out those local volunteer firefighters when/wherever possible. I’ve spent way too many years living in small towns, that rely on entirely volunteer departments, to ever discount the tremendous job they do.

Register early for a discount on the registration fee of $15.
Little Tykes registration is $5.
Registration is from 8am until noon on the day of the show.
Judging is from noon until 2pm.
Awards are at 2:30

“Back-to-School Bootcamp”

I love when Christians put their money where their mouths are. Charity work, anytime you help someone less fortunate than yourself with no gain on your part, is always a good thing.

It’s easy to talk about helping others, much harder to actually “do” something. I’ll always take those who practice christianity over those who merely call themselves “Christians”.

See you at “Back-to-School Bootcamp”.

Trying Ebay to Go

Friday, July 20th, 2007

This sounded like an interesting feature. I find stuff on ebay that I want to show others all the time. Like these:

About Tulsa, OK

The good, the bad, and the ugly parts of a stay at home mom's life raising kids in Tulsa. Where to go, what to see, and some of the funny things that life teaches us while we're busy trying to raise our children.
