Since joining National Geographic Explorer as host in 2002, Lisa Ling has covered the looting of antiquities in war-torn Iraq, investigated the deadly drug war in Colombia, examined the complex issues surrounding China’s one-child policy, and journeyed more than 1600 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in search of treasure. The young journalist immerses herself in the stories she investigates, sometimes going undercover and into danger zones.
Ling has been working in television since she was 16. By age 25, she was the senior war correspondent for Channel One News. Prior to globe-trotting for Explorer, Ling was known as a co-host of Barbara Walters’ daytime talk show, The View. Ling also serves as a special contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show, covering everything from the AIDS orphan crisis in Uganda to bride burning in India. In 2005, she co-authored the book Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride, a compelling exploration of actions that connect a woman with herself, her family, her community and other women.
Tulsa Town Hall tickets are sold by subscription only: $60 for all five presentations, which are held at 10:30 a.m. on Fridays in Chapman Music Hall. For more information, call 749-5965.

The Legendary Maxine Brown
| Show Times | May 31 at 8 p.m. |
| Venue | John H. Williams Theatre |
| Presenter | Roger Peacock and Sound 2000 |

VH1.com calls Maxine Brown “one of the most underrated soul and R&B vocalists of the ’60s.” Although her original song “All in My Mind” was a #2 R&B hit, followed by the #3 hit “Funny,” a series of label changes seemed to sidetrack her path to stardom. In 1963, she signed with Wand Records where she took “Oh No, Not My Baby” to #24 on the pop charts and scored several hit duets with Chuck Jackson.
In 1991, Brown finally received the recognition she deserved when, along with Ray Charles and Curtis Mayfield, she received the Rhythm & Blues Foundation’s annual Pioneer Award.
Brown will perform her hits as well as songs from her 2006 CD From the Heart. Tickets are $39-$49.

I read “My Stroke of Insight” in one sitting - I couldn’t put it down. I laughed. I cried. It was a fantastic book (I heard it’s a NYTimes Bestseller and I can see why!), but I also think it will be the start of a new, transformative Movement! No one wants to have a stroke as Jill Bolte Taylor did, but her experience can teach us all how to live better lives. Her TED.com speech was one of the most incredibly moving, stimulating, wonderful videos I’ve ever seen. Her Oprah Soul Series interviews were fascinating. They should make a movie of her life so everyone sees it. This is the Real Deal and gives me hope for humanity.
