This triple-bill program includes three contemporary pieces: Black Cake, Remansos and Viva Verdi, a world premiere by choreographer Luciano Cannito.
Elegantly dressed couples dance with each other at a society party, revealing a range of undercurrents in the relationships between the men and the women who eventually have too much to drink and lose their sophistication. Black Cake provides a host of hilarious sequences. Choreography is by Hans van Manen, with music by Tchaikovsky, Janacek, Stravinsky, Mascagni and Massenet.
Remansos, choreographed to the poetic waltzes of composer Enrique Granados, was first staged in New York by the American Ballet Theater in November 1997. Choreographer Nacho Duato was lauded for the expressive strength, geometric lines and dynamic use of space and forms in the piece. He lengthened the work for Compañía Nacional de Danza, choreographing three of the most beautiful popular dances by the composer to create this Remansos.
Choreographer Luciano Cannito returns to Tulsa after the critical success of his Mare Nostrum. He has created more than 45 works in his career for some of the most prestigious dance companies in Europe. A world premiere of his Viva Verdi, a tribute to composer Guiseppe Verdi, will complete this outstanding program.
