The High Cost of Eating
Why is it that healthy eating costs so much more?
It’s hard to convince your children that fresh fruit and vegetables are really good when you can rarely afford to buy them. My kids are total sceptics too. They’re like, “If this stuff was really that good you would buy it”.
The problem is, if I bought all the fruits and vegetables we should eat, I wouldn’t have money left for the other things we need. And other things are needed (you can go without soap and toilet paper, I’m not gonna).
It isn’t just fresh produce that is more expensive either. Healthy breads and cereals are more expensive too. Just try convincing your kids to eat oatmeal during the summer because it’s healthier. Not fun.
As much as I would like to shop at some of the alternative grocery stores I mentioned in a previous post, the fact of the matter is, I shop at Walmart, not Akin’s, Wild Oats, or NaturalFarms. I have a family of 5 to feed and provide for with a monthly budget of less than $400. That has to cover both food and non-food items for all of us, people and animals. So shopping at the better stores is not an option for us.
One might interpret it as a deliberate attempt to kill off the poor, since we’re the ones who have to buy the cheap stuff instead of the healthy stuff. It’s enough to turn any sane, caring mother into a tinfoil-hat wearing conspiracy theorist.
